RED metadata can be backed up and restored to another database (which must already have a RED metadata repository installed using Setup Administrator). One of the two options available to do this is using the Backup > Export Metadata and Backup > Restore Metadata options. If these options are used with an Oracle database that is version 11.2 or later the resulting restored repository may not function correctly due to missing metadata tables.
This is due to a feature of Oracle called Deferred Segment Creation - tables do not have segments assigned until the first row is inserted. The result of this is that the Export Metadata function does not include metadata tables that were empty in the source database and therefore these tables are not recreated in the target database.
The workaround for this issue is to run the Validate Metadata Repository function in Setup Administrator, which will recreate any missing metadata tables. The repository should then function normally.
