Logging into RED generates error "ORA 12154:TNS: Could not resolve the connect identifier specified."

Modified on Tue, 28 Jul 2015 at 02:52 PM

Scenario

Logging in to a RED repository created with Oracle on Linux you see an error "ORA 12154:TNS: Could not resolve the connect identifier specified."

The same error is reported when using any other application that connects to Oracle using an ODBC DSN created with the Microsoft ODBC Driver for Oracle.

Cause

The most likely cause of this error is that the user password contains an @ symbol.

The Microsoft ODBC Driver for Oracle that is required for the RED repository will generate this error when using a password containing the @ symbol to connect to an Oracle on Linux database.

Work-around

The only work-around is to alter the user password to one that does not contain an @ symbol.

Note: using @ in Oracle passwords is generally considered to be bad practice so this should be avoided.
